Location
The northern part of Himachal Pradesh beautifully locates the spectacular town of “Dharamsala”. The area of the town records to be 28.81 sq kms. The town further separates itself into two parts with a variation of 457 meters. Three sides of the town are embraced by the mountain and the valley widens towards the southern route. The precise position of Dharamsala lies on the urge of the Dauladhar range giving a dramatic view because of the snow covered "white mountains" and the Pir Panjal province of the external Himalayas and the Kangra valley under it. The higher part is marked by the features such as, thick coverings of pine trees, Himalayan oak, and forests. The altitude is between 1250 meters to 1982 meters from the sea level.

The Climate of Dharamsala
A moderate climate inhabits Dharamsala in the summer season and in the month of July and August it faces the heavy rainfall. The days are warm in summers and the nights are chilling. The winter season is severely chilled with heavy snowfalls. In winters, the temperature can drop down below the freezing point. In springtime, the weather is pleasing and gentle, but the nights are chilling. The spring and fall weather is perfect time for trekking lovers to visit the town.
Best time to visit : The best time to visit is from the month of October to December. Avoid visiting in the monsoon season because of the landslides.
The City
Dharamsala is widely acknowledged as the “queen of the Himalayas”. The town gives a splendid sight of pine forest lands, snowy peaks, plush tea gardens, sparkling streams and arresting wood hills. Dharamsala in northern India is the abode of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the pious and activist leader of the Tibetan community. Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj : With the arrival of the saintly leader, Dalai Lama, along with thousands of migrants to Dharamsala gave life to the town. It is famous for the Buddhist centers of pilgrimage. The place is busy with bustling bazaars selling rugs, handicraft items and scrumptious Tibetan food.
Bhagsunag Fall : It is a fall located just 11 kms from Dharamsala. The major reason to visit this place is for its ancient temples, a fresh water spring, waterfalls and slate pit.
St. John's Church : The church lies between the McLeod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj. The church has a monument devoted to the Lord Elgin, who was one of the viceroys of our country. The church is located at a distance of 8 km away from the town.
Dharamkot : Located on the crest of a hill, it is at a distance of 14 kms from the town. It is a thrilling picnic spot that offers scenic view of the Kangra valley and the snow clad Dhauladhar range of mountains. To reach Dharamkot a simple trekking is done from Bhagsu, with numerous small restaurant providing leisure and beverages.

Chinmaya Tapovan : Positioned on the banks of Bindu Saras, Tapovan is just 10 kms from the town. It is a serene ashram created by the great exponent of ‘Gita’, Swami Chinmayananda. The ashram includes a 9m high icon of Lord Hanuman, Temple of Lord Ram, a meditation hall, a school and a health & recreation center.
Sujanpur Tira : This place is eminent for the incredible wall paintings and the architecture based temples. The fort here is also worth visiting. In the festival of Holi major events takes place attracting many visitors every year. The distance record is 8 kms from Dharamsala.
Dal Lake : It is a preliminary point for expedition and trekking; located next to Tibetan children village. Walking beside the lake will sure make visitor nostalgic about the place. Setting amidst mountain and deodar forest range the place is 11 kms from the state.
How to reach
By Air : Gaggal airport is the bordering airport, sited at a distance of 15 kms from Dharamsala. Other places where air facility is provided for Dharamsala are Jammu, Amritsar, and Chandigarh.
By Rail : Pathankot is the closest measured from Dharamsala is 95 kms. A thin railway line between Pathankot and Jogindernagar passes through Kangra in Dharamsala.
By Road : The Himachal Road Transport Corporation is constantly running buses that link almost all the roads. From Manali bus services are accessible to Dharamsala. The drive from Delhi and Chandigarh is very safe, linking good highways. Luxury buses practice to Dharamsala from Delhi and Shimla.  |
